Unrealized Projects Zine Collection!

The New York Art Book Fair is this weekend and I always try and do something new for it. I am not actually selling anything at the NYABF but my new zines will be available from the Bad Books table at the new offshoot art book fair, the Independent Art Book Fair. I realize that is mildly confusing but the majority of you don’t live in NYC anyway, so you can just get my zines from the Driven By Boredom Etsy store. Anyway, let’s get in to it….

I am constantly coming up with bad ideas for projects or art shows or zines or websites or whatever it may be. Often those ideas are just collections of images that I pull together when I realize I have a few similar shots. For example my book Dinner With Igor came about because I just would take photos of friends when we were out to dinner and when I lined up a bunch of these things together they made for a pretty interesting body of work.

Unrealized Projects is a series of zines that didn’t end up being quite as interesting… or maybe they did but there just weren’t enough of them. I also wanted to do some old school black and white photo copied zines like I used to make when I was a punk rock kid in high school so I decided on making several black and white zines and packaging them together.

Each package comes with three black and white zines and an insert explaining the project with a photo on the back. Each insert is signed and numbered out of 50 and each package comes in a black envelope with a sticker designed by zine and button maker Emma Karin who also did all the titles to the zine. Also she helped me assemble all of these things and apparently now I owe her a ton of free food.

This series will hopefully continue with three more zines in the future but these things ended up being oddly expensive so you guys gotta buy them first… so let’s talk about the first three.

Unrealized Projects Volume 1: Who’s In My Rental Car?
This zine is the longest of the three zines and is a collection of photos taken in my rental cars over the years. Whenever I travel I book the rental car even before I get a hotel because worst case I can crash in the car. After a decade of traveling all over the country as a photographer I have taken so many photos in rental cars. The zine is a good mix of nudity, musicians and just way too many people crammed into a tiny car. I also made a randomizing website for these images with my friend Justin. It is incredibly stupid.

Who's In My Rental Car?

Unrealized Projects Volume 2: Fuck Yo Couch!
Remember this Dave Chappelle skit with Rick James? Well realized I had a handful of weird photos of people on my couch (technically it’s a futon) and decided it would make for another really dumb website. I didn’t actually make that website yet (mights still happen?) but I did make this zine. This zine is mostly just photos of naked girls on my couch but there’s also some not naked girls on my couch and some other weird surprises. Still, I like to think my couch has more fun than your couch, so fuck yo couch.

Fuck Yo Couch

Unrealized Projects Volume 3: Celebrity Selfies
This zine came about because I wanted to submit some stuff to a photo magazine that was doing a “Selfies” themed issue. I knew I had a bunch of photos of celebrities taking selfies so I figured that would be some sort of interesting commentary on vanity and celebrity and this culture of trying to impress people via your social media… but then I decided that was fucking stupid and just turned it into a really short zine. All of the photos in this one are digital so that’s a first for me since most of my print works are 35mm.

Celebrity Selfies

Now normally my zines are $10 each but you get all three of these, plus the signed/numbered insert for $12. The margins on these suck so I have to sell most of them just to break even, but I am pretty into these things and I hope you guys are too. Buy them on Etsy or swing by the IABF this weekend!

Ps. Thanks to Ricardo from Subdrive for helping design the zines!

Public Release – 2.10.16

Last night my new zine Public came out and we had a party at Leftfield. It was real wild as expected for a party in a basement thrown by myself and Boobs of Bushwick. I hate throwing parties cause I always get annoyed at the people that don’t show up but apparently the people who did show up had a blast cause I keep getting texts and Tweets about it so I guess we did something right.

I think we did make one mistake is that we threw a party in the Lower East Side which is accessible to North Brooklyn by a train that stops running at 11:45 because fuck the MTA. So at 11:30 the party was fucking insane and by midnight it was just pretty chill. As someone who hates putting pants on before midnight it was kinda disappointing but we had several solid hours of total madness so I can’t complain too much.

Huge thanks to Prince Terrence for DJing all night, PopPorn for sponsoring Public and sending us a bunch of weird porn to give away, Kate for selling my zine topless all night, Leftfield and their cute bartenders (you too Brick) and all my friends & supporters who showed up last night. Also thanks to Hannibal Buress who decided he hadn’t partied hard enough at Mardi Gras and came by the party pretty much right after his plane landed. Go watch his new Netflix special already.

I think that’s it. Obviously you should order your copy of Public. I will be here packing them all up tonight and watching hockey. If you pre-ordered one don’t worry they will be shipping tomorrow.

Now click here to see the crazy NSFW photos from the Public zine release party at Leftfield.

Public Nudity Zine Pre-Order & Party!

I have another new zine coming out. Seriously… another one. I just keep cranking these things out cause I like flooding my living room with heavy boxes and packing peanuts. I think this one is really good and unlike my Arts zine this one has a bunch of nudity which I just need to accept is the only reason any of you ever come here…

“Public” is a public nudity zine in collaboration with my friends over at PopPorn. It’s 44 pages, 56 photos, and more boobs than I want to count right now, but I recommend you do that when you get your copy. At a mere $10 this thing is a god damn steal! And for $40 you can get a copy PLUS a 5″x7″ print of a really rad photo of April O’Neil and Shay Laren who are total fucking babes. Both the zine and the print will be signed by me and the print is numbered out of 25 as well.

Now, for the important thing! We are throwing a party!

The zine comes out February 10th and we are throwing a rager at Leftfield in the Lower East Side. The party starts at 9 and goes all night. Yeah, it’s on a fucking Wednesday because weekends are for assholes. The party is being thrown by myself, PopPorn and Boobs of Bushwick. Do you remember the last time I threw a party with Boobs of Bushwick? That shit was out of control.

We got Prince Terrence DJing, live naked photo shoots, topless girls selling books, a clothing optional dress code and fucking total madness all night. Plus you can come by a zine so that’s important. PopPorn is gonna be giving out free porn and I even have some Blacked.com hats to give away from my Vegas trip. Nothing puts an outfit together like a hat advertising your love for interracial porn!

The party is free, the zine is $10 and the booze will be priced at a cost dictated by what the market will bare given that we live in a capitalist system governed by the principals of the free market. Party forever.

Oh, and one more thing. Since I am promoting a public nude zine that means you will get a bunch of public nude photos over the next two weeks so even if you are a cheap fucking bastard and don’t live in NYC you can still enjoy the zine release anyway. Check back next week for some really good sets!

Now go and pre-order Public already! You need it in your life!

Zine Friends On Saturday!

I am really excited about Zine Friends this weekend. I know I wrote about it a little bit last week but I wanted to do an official post since I have been working my ass off getting ready for it. Zine Friends is a zine fair put on by Killer Acid and Wizard Skull at Cotton Candy Machine in Williamsburg. It’s part of Comic Arts Brooklyn, it’s happening this Saturday from 11am to 7pm and I will be there the whole time.

An yeah, I realize that I should not be excited about sitting in a chair for 8 hours but I am real happy to be doing my own table. I have sold stuff at zine fair in the past but never had my own table. I went out and bought dumb stuff like displays for the zines and things like that and made a bunch of new stuff for the fair.

The main thing I have for the fair is my new Arts zine. It features black and white 35mm photos of artists with their art. It’s my first collaborative zine and the first one to feature exclusively black and white photos. Very different from anything I have done before. Plus it has that art school turtle on the cover which is awesome.

I will be of course selling my older zines/ books like Same Old City, Dinner With Igor and Food Tattoos. I might break out the artist proof editions of Fuck LA that I was saving for something special and maybe even some proof pages from the long sold out Get Your Kicks. Oh, and I will have the super rare What Happens In Vegas photo album!

A big thing I have for zine friends is a ton of photo prints. I don’t normally sell 8″x10″ prints because they don’t make me enough money to make it worth to pull images and print them, but I made a ton of 8″x10″ prints just for Zine Friends (and hopefully future zine fairs!). I will also have some Polaroids including some I have never published or made available for sale and some left over prints from Dinner With Igor and Fuck LA.

On top of that I will have Driven By Boredom shot glasses which at the moment you can only get as part of the DBB Grab Bag, I will have a bunch of post cards and stickers I even made some new buttons! Plus there should be a big surprise that I collaborated on with another artist… but I don’t want to give that away until it’s completely finished. It’s pretty fantastic though…

I think that’s all I can remember for now, but I will probably bring a bag full of stuff from my archives. I have some old DBB shirts laying around and I am sure I can find some other crap around my apartment that won’t really be for sale unless you ask about it. So if you read this, and can can make it out and care, let me know.

I guess that’s all I have to say. I will of course be signing anything you want and I am sure some of the artists there in the zine will sign stuff as well. Oh, and everything will be on sale and cheaper than on my Etsy store and you can barter with me and shit. Now here’s Facebook invite and here’s the flyer. See you in Brooklyn Saturday…

“Arts” Zine Pre-Order!

On November 7th the Zine Friends zine fair returns to Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn and this time I am gonna be part of it. I covered the last Zine Friends and this time they asked me to be a part of it. I had a great time and bought some cool stuff but I am a photographer and nearly everyone else involved is some sort of drawers or somethin’. I figured I would have to come up with something special for the fest.

So I bring you “Arts’ a zine about people who draw real good. I photographed nearly 20 of my artist friends on black and white 35mm film and then got them to send me art of theirs for my first really collaborative project. It’s got art and portraits from tattoo artists, graffiti artists, painters, illustrators and cartoonists. It was a lot of fun to shoot and put together.

The zine is limited to 150 copies and is only $10! It comes out at the fair on November 7th but you can pre-order it now. You can also get a copy with a 5″x7″ print of your choice of artists which might be cool if you were into one of these artists.

Also, unrelated to the zine I put together some grab bags on my Etsy store featuring a DBB tote bag, shot glass, some stickers and buttons and your choice of signed zines. So perhaps if you wanna get a copy of “Arts’ you could get a bunch more stuff for just $15 more.

Lastly, here’s a list of the artists:

Buff Monster, Molly Crabapple, Matt Crabe, DAZE, Day By Day, Blanda Eggenschwiler, ELLE, Erik Foss, Nicholas Gazin, Penelope Gazin, Lamour Supreme, Sheila Marcello, Eddy Segal, Amy Shapiro, Minka Sicklinger, SMURFO, Nate Turbow & Wizard Skull!

Now go get your hands on a copy!

Books, Babes & Some Really Weird Music

Hey it’s Monday and after I spent 3 days at the NY Art Book Fair and yesterday dealing with the pain that is my Miami Dolphins fandom it’s time to start fresh with a new week. It’s possible I ate two entire pizzas last night and today it’s time to catch up on a bunch of work and perhaps force myself to eat a salad.

With that in mind, let’s drop a bunch of stuff on you real quick.  Got some new naked photos, some weird music and of course I gotta try and sell you some zines again. Let’s start with the zines…

I spent Thursday night and most of Friday and Saturday at the New York Art Book Fair. As both a creator and consumer of photo books the NY Art Book Fair is pretty much my favorite thing ever. I get to look at so much rad shit, buy a bunch of rare books and zines and hopefully make more money than I spend. It’s also a good networking opportunity. Last year I met Mike Krim who runs Paper Work NYC and this year he let me sell my stuff at his booth. Last year I met fucked up illustrators Matt Crabe and Wizard Skull and this year I am just finishing a zine collaboration with them and a bunch of other artists many of whom I ran into at the book fair. Oh, did I mention that there are so many real cute girls there who also make really cool shit? What could be better than that?

The zine fair went pretty awesome and I actually stayed real close to my budget a picked up some stuff that I am really happy with. I also think I sold a bunch of stuff, I don’t have the exact totals but I think I made more than I spent so high five. But I do know I have some copies of my new zine Same Old City left still so they are now for sale in my Etsy store and will ship pretty much right away. I just mailed off all the pre orders. So get you copy now!

Next up, let’s talk babes. A really long time ago I shot my friend Caitlin. She had done some modeling for her roommates art projects but I was the first person to photograph her professionally. We took a bunch of photos and even though she’s kinda awkward it was a good kinda awkward and I think we got some really pretty photos. I posted a few to my Tumblr and stuff and then totally forgot about the set. Last week I found the set and realized I had never posted it. It had been a while so I hit her up about the photos and she didn’t really want them on my website which is totally fair. I love shooting new models, but there’s always a risk that they are gonna change their mind about the photos and I always respect that even though it can be really disappointing. Luckily we came to a compromise. I told her I wouldn’t post any more of the nude ones on my site, but she said I could publish them to Girls of Driven By Boredom. That way the images aren’t just floating about the internet for free and you gotta at least spend some money to see them. Seems like a reasonable compromise.

The last thing in this way too long post is a weird one. I got a bunch of my Miami Dolphins vinyl collection online. The Dolphins may have been embarrassed yesterday but I will never be embarrassed by my collection of some of the weirdest records to ever be released. I have what I assume is the world’s largest collection of Miami Dolphins themed vinyl and my plan is to eventually build a website with all of my collection on it but for now I started a Sound Cloud with just the singles. If you are a fan of football, record collecting or just absurd 70s and 80s nostalgia you need to check this out.

“Same Old City” Zine Pre-Order!

The New York Art Book Fair is coming to NYC on the 18th of September. As a huge photo book nerd and zine collector it’s one of my favorite times of the year. Last year aside from dropping way too much money on books I met Mike Krim of Paperwork NYC. He’s published some amazing zines, several of which I owned before meeting him, and we clearly have some similar ideas about photography.

In January he asked me if he could sell some of my stuff at his table for the LA Art Book Fair and he and my buddies Mint & Serf invited me to join the art show that they did around the fair. I was an awesome experience made more awesome by the release of Fuck LA.

Fuck LA was my LA Art Book Fair exclusive zine that contained my craziest photos from my trips over the years to LA. It came signed and numbered and with a print and I only made 50 of them. They were expensive but I still sold about half of them art the book fair and another 10 via pre-order and then I upped the price and put the rest on my Etsy store and they sold out quickly. The whole thing was really fun and pretty much paid for my flight out to LA.

So with the New York Art Book Fair coming up I decided I should do a similar release that will be sold again at the Paperwork NYC table along with Dinner With Igor and Food Tattoos. The book is called “Same Old City” and it’s a collection of some of my craziest 35mm photos from my 9 years in NYC.

It’s horizontally oriented which is a bit different from my previous books and zines. There are only 100 copies being made and 25 of those will be signed and numbered and come with a print of my friend Sarah Lee flashing me in front of the J Train. The zine combines some of my work from These New York Streets with a bunch of nudity and random insanity. Think street photography + boobs + fighting.  Good times.

In order to pay for the printing I am releasing only 9 pre-orders of the limited edition. They are $40 which is the price they will be at the Art Book Fair and any that don’t sell will go back online for $50 after the fair so ordering now guarantees you a copy and saves you $10 if they don’t sell out at the fair. There’s only 25 total and me and the designer are both keeping one so you are down to 23. Just saying…

In totally unrelated news I realize I haven’t updated Girls of Driven By Boredom recently so I uploaded an exclusive set of Vonka Romanov & Lea Hart shot on black and white film. I was asked to submit some photos for an “erotic” art book about lesbians and right around the same time Lea contacted me about shooting. I mentioned the project and she brought her real life girlfriend Vonka over and I shot a bunch of photos of them making out and other stuff. I posted a few of the photos on my Tumblr but for the most part these are completely unpublished. There will be a set of them that I shot digitally later that day but they aren’t quite as sexy as these… Click here to sign up for Girls of DBB!

And now go order Same Old City!!

2015 LA Art Book Fair

If you know me at all you would probably agree that I am not the most exuberant of humans. I tend to be monotonous and often pessimistic. I live a pretty great life and while I appreciate it, there are few things that really bring me joy. If you were to ask me what makes me the most happy in life I would immediately answer the Miami Dolphins winning a game, but that happens pretty rarely. My second answer would be when I open the first box of something I have created.

When I was 15 I started a magazine and a record label and assembling that first box of records was one of the greatest moments of my life. Since then I have made all manor of media and merch and it always brings me great pleasure. Recently I have produced four photo books/zines/albums and I brought them all to the LA Art Book Fair and it was the best thing to happen in ages despite spending the previous week photographing naked porn stars.

I have been to the NY Art Book Fair a bunch of times and it’s always great but thanks to PaperWork NYC this was the first time I have ever sold anything at an art book fair. I had copies of my new book Dinner With Igor, the zine Food Tattoos, my expensive Vegas photo album and the special Fuck LA zine and print I made just for the fair.

I actually sold a ton of stuff. I got back less than 10 Dinner With Igor’s and I had Dana DeArmond sign five of those. I got back about 15 of the 50 Fuck LA’s that I made and I had April O’Neil sign five of those. I even sold one of the Vegas albums even though I mostly brought them for display. I have sold more than 10 of them but they have all been to fans of my work, not just people who picked it up randomly at the book fair. I got a ton of Food Tattoos back but I brought a ton of them too but still I think I have less than 100 of the 300 I originally printed. All good news.

Aside from selling stuff I also bought a ton of stuff and met a few of my favorite artists. I bought Ed and Deanna Templeton’s out of print zine collection and I finally got to meet Ed. I ran into Tony Stamolis who I love as an artist and have been friends with via the internet for years. He loved Fuck LA so I traded him one for a print which actually came in the mail today. I met Tom Neely of Henry and Glenn Forever fame and got him to sign a copy of the first book. I also got to meet Bill Daniel an old punk rock photographer who I have bought several photos from over the years (including photos of Henry Rollins & Glenn Danzig oddly enough) and got a photo he shot of Glen E. Friedman who I also own a photo (and many books) by. I probably spent another $200 on top of that so I probably didn’t make quite as much money as I could have, but I have no complaints. Pretty epic weekend.

I took a handful of black and white photos and a few snapshots at the book fair and a few at the Love//War show. I figured they made sense together as a small 35mm gallery you guys might enjoy.

So click here to see my 35mm shots from the 2015 LA Art Book Fair at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA! (Very mildly NSFW)

And click here to see my recently updated Etsy store featuring all my books, zines and other photography items perfect for Valentines Day or Presidents Day or some other holiday that you could justify spending money on my arts.

Book Updates, Food Tattoos & Art Criticism

I got the copies of my new book Dinner With Igor on Friday. They were supposed to come today so that was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately there was a small print error which and I had to get the books reprinted. Fortunately my printer MGX Copy was great about it and put a rush order on the reprint and the books will be in my hands on Thursday.

On top of that, I will also be getting my 36 page zine “Food Tattoos” from MGX the same day. I am pretty excited about both projects and I can’t wait until you get your hands on them. If you were one of my Kickstarter backers your books will ship Friday, Saturday Monday and Tuesday (hopefully I will get them all done by Tuesday)!

Because of the holidays I am pushing my book release party to January but you can still preorder both Dinner With Igor and Food Tattoos at my Etsy store!

You can get signed versions of them both at a discount if you click right here!

Lastly, I should mention that I am giving a 10 minute talk about the books and some other projects on Wednesday as part of the monthly Bushwick Art Crit Group session. I truly hate talking about my work especially around actual fine artists, but for some reason I agreed to do it, so it should be interesting at the very least. Plus Wizard Skull is talking right after me and that guy spends his days ruining your childhood and that’s worth the price of admission alone (it’s free). So if anyone is bored in Brooklyn on Wednesday come hang out!
