Museum Of Trash – 6.20.19

A few weeks ago I got to go to one of the NY Department of Sanitation’s garages on the Upper East Side to take some photos for Gothamist. Photographing trash trucks or something would be honestly really interesting to me but what awaited me was something much cooler. A man named Nelson Molina started picking up trash in 1981 and bringing it back to the garage, cleaning it and refurbishing it. He continued this up until he retired in 2015 filling most of the second level of the garage with previously abandoned treasures.

The “Treasures in the Trash” collection was recently turned into an art exhibit at the Hunter East Harlem Gallery and the NYDS is looking for a permanent home for the collection. The reason he could fill most of the second level is because the building is no longer structurally sound enough to park trucks and the NYDS is going to be moving out in the next 5 years.

I would talk more about the collection, but you should just read the Gothamist article and look at the pictures because it’s pretty hard to describe how cool the place was. I will say it was amazing to talk to Nelson because obsessive collecting is in my blood and I love this kind of thing. I dream about opening some sort of weird museum one day and I have traveled the country to check out things like the Abita Mystery House or the “Devil’s Rope” Museum and Nelson’s trash fits right into that part of my brain. This gig was the perfect intersection of two of my favorite assignments I did for the Village Voice with Pinky Guest years ago: We went on a Valentine’s Day tour of a sewage treatment plant, and we also got to go to Antiques Roadshow. (Full disclosure: Pinky and I both have Abita Mystery House tattoos.)

Anyway, go read the Gothamist article and click through their slideshow because it’s in higher resolution than mine and I want them to keep hiring me, but my gallery has some extra photos in it because I took way too many photos so you can check that out below too.

Bunny Colby & Sammie Six

I am headed out of town this weekend and then I am back for two days and then I am off to LA for a couple of weeks. I have no idea when I am gonna have time to update over the next few weeks (don’t worry, I will get something up) so I figured I would give you guys not one, but TWO galleries to gawk at while I am busy traveling: Sammie Six and Bunny Colby.

These shoots have a lot in common anyway. I shot them both in Vegas in January during AVN Awards week, they both feature rad girls with rad “enhancements” and the photos happen to be unusually tame for photos of porn stars. They were also two of the earliest shoots I did with my new camera and were a little bit underexposed because I wasn’t used to the digital viewfinder on my camera. I realize that is completely boring but if I don’t make excuses for my mediocre photography is it even a proper Driven By Boredom post?

Bunny Colby seems really great from the short time we spent together. I have followed her on Twitter for a while and she has a couple of those amazing Wilford Brimley cats and when she’s not making dirty movies she rescues cats for a living. It was fun hanging out while we were shooting, but unfortunately I think we were talking too much because we didn’t finish the shoot. Unfortunately in the middle of the shoot I got an urgent text and had to run out which was a total bummer. Hopefully we will get to finish the shoot one of these days.

Sammie Six is not Sammie Sixx another model I photographed many years ago. She is however a skateboarder who I really want to shoot skating nude one day. We had been trying to shoot for a few years but didn’t get the chance until we had a few minutes of free time in Vegas. She had access to a suite at the Hard Rock that had these great stairs that we shot on. The lighting wasn’t great but we managed and she told me the photos were some of the best images she’s taken as far as capturing who she really is, which is about the best possible compliment I could be given. She’s only a few hours from LA so maybe I can convince her to finally shoot those skateboarding photos with me in a week or two…

As per always, let me promote Girls of Driven By Boredom. These photos have been up there, in high resolution for a couple days. No exclusive shots from these shoots, but there’s always a ton of exclusive stuff on there and the site is only $2.50 a month which keeps me from having to get a real job. So if you like what I’m doing, sign up. Now for some photos…

Magdalene At The Movies

I still have four photoshoots I haven’t published from 2017. I don’t really have great excuses for why I haven’t published them yet, but two of those are coming right now. In October 2017 I went on a trip to Florida that didn’t go exactly as planned, but I still shot a bunch of stuff. I had to be in Miami for a Dolphins game, but I really wanted to check out the weirdness that is the Sausage Castle in Orlando and I had an idea. I had met Magdalene when we worked on a Gathering of the Juggalos story together for Brooklyn Vegan and we had done a photo shoot I really liked when she was visiting NYC. I knew she went to school near Tampa, FL and also really wanted to go to the Sausage Castle so I hit her up to see if she wanted to do a mini road trip together. I would fly to Tampa and then we would drive to the Sausage Castle and then down to Del Ray, FL where I have a few friends I wanted to see and take a ton of photos along the way. She was in.

Things got screwed up a bit on the way as it rained the whole drive from Tampa to Orlando so we couldn’t really do any of the road trip style shoots I normally do and she bailed on driving me to Del Ray which meant I had to take damn bus and then when I got to Del Ray one of my friend’s was in Tampa and another blew me off. Fortunately my third friend (who I run a non-profit with) was around and took me to dinner and we both went to Miami for the Dolphins game so it wasn’t really a big deal. Still I was kinda frustrated about the whole thing which is probably why I am not publishing these until now. But I am not great at holding a grudge and Magda is really hot so not only am I not pissed about it anymore but she lives in LA now so I am sure I will be bugging her to shoot again next time I am in LA.

Aaaaaannnyywaaay, the important thing here is the day before we drove to Orlando. I decided to stay in Clearwater, FL which is pretty near the Tampa airport and also home to the headquarters of Scientology which I absolutely had to visit. That shit was as crazy as you would imagine and there was security everywhere. It was great. Personally if I was running a cult I would try and make my headquarters look slightly less creepy, but maybe that’s why I don’t run a cult.

So the first of the two shoots we did was in Clearwater, at my terrible motel picked specifically for it’s Florida man vibe. There was a Dolphin painted on my door. It was wonderful. We took photos at like midnight though so there was no natural light and if you know anything about me it’s that I can’t color balance for shit so that’s why these photos don’t get their own post. There are a few nice shots and Magda is a babe, but overall they aren’t that great.

The greatness happened at our next location (okay, these photos are terribly lit and color balanced too, but at least the location was amazing). When I landed in Tampa I had hours to kill before I met up with Magda so I let the internet know I was in town and looking for someone to photograph or something to do. One of my Instagram followers reached out and said they were the manager of a movie theater and I could shoot there if I did it after midnight. I figured that they managed a small art house theater but when I got there it was a massive multiplex. It was amazing.

As I mentioned the light was terrible and in some cases there was just way too little of it. God I wish I had the camera that I have now because that thing pretty much shoots in the dark. It wouldn’t have helped much as far as the mixed lighting and ugly overhead lights but it would have been amazing for the actual theaters where even with the house lights up it was way too dark. Even it most of the photos aren’t great the experience and a few of the shots I got made it so worth it. I also shot this little video thing which was pretty fun.

Okay, this post is way too long already but I need to plug the pay site again. If you want to see a full gallery of shots from our trip to the Sausage Castle you can find them on Girls of DBB exclusively (I posted the gallery a while ago so you need to scroll a bit). There are also some bonus fully nude photos of Magdalene from this shoot there. All in high res as per usual. And now for the free photos…

Same Old City Zine Release

This Sunday I am going to be part of Cultural Traffic NY at the Hester Street Fair. Cultural Traffic is an art fair that takes place in a bunch of cities including London, Miami and the LA fair that I was part of late last year. There are a bunch of great exhibitors and you can come out and get books and zines and art prints and all sorts of stuff. Dashwood Books, my favorite book store in NYC, will be there as will Richardson, my buddy Seth Olenick and a ton of other vendors.

I will be selling a bunch of my books, zines and prints including some sold out stuff, rare items and special editions and random merch that I don’t sell in my online store like DBB shot glasses that are too expensive to be worth shipping. Oh, and there will be a postcard rack with a ton of postcards because I bought one as decoration in my living room so I had to fill it.  I will also of course sign anything you want.

Specially for the fair I re-released my NYC photo zine Same Old City. It’s probably my favorite zine and it’s one of my craziest. Tons of sex and violence and street photography and general mayhem. It’s been long sold out so it seemed like a good time to bring it back. The new zine has four extra pages (and 5 new photos because I swapped one out), a slightly new cover and is limited to justy 100 copies. You can order it online now, but if you grab it at the fair it will be $10 instead of $12.

Okay, that’s all I got for now. Just wanted to tell you guys about the artfair and the new (?) zine. Hope to see a bunch of you guys Sunday. Online orders will ship Monday.

Khloe Kapri, Kasey Warner & Damia

If you are a regular reader of this site you might know by now that Kasey Warner is one of my favorite people. I have taken her photo a bunch, but more than that we are good friends and until she got a cat she’d always let me stay with her when I was in LA. (I guess she’d still let me crash, I am just real allergic to cats.) This has come in very handy like the time when I ended up shooting her and three other girls at her house for my Instaxxx book. Last time I was in town, I couldn’t crash with her but we still hung out a few times and we took a bunch of photos.

At the time Kasey was dating Khloe Kapri and Khloe’s friend Damia was staying with them, so when I went over to get lunch with Kasey I met Damia and immediately wanted to take her photo. I ended up shooting her and Kasey when Khloe was at work. I then came back a few days later to shoot Khloe by herself and Damia was still over so after the shoot I shot all three of them together. And then after that I ended up shooting Damia by herself. So in total I four shoots with these three girls which is honestly fantastic productivity. When you add that first shoot I did with Kasey, the ones I did with Kristen Scott and Cassidy Klein (Girls of DBB exclusive) and that group shoot for the book that’s eight shoots all shot at Kasey’s place. That’s kinda amazing.

I should also mention that Khloe and Damia are awesome too. I convinced Damia to get on Twitter and I feel like we talk all the time now, and Khloe I shot in Vegas and I feel like she’s one of the few models that really enjoy the rawness of my photos. I think a lot of people like my work until they are the subject of it and then they suddenly wish I used photoshop, but she seems to really love my work and the way I have presented her in it and that honestly makes me really happy. Can’t wait to photograph them both again.

Okay, so here’s the first of the galleries. More to come sooner or later. I just don’t really want to post them all back to back or anything like that. These were taken in the little guest house situation in Kasey’s back yard. Oh, I should also mention that photographing three people in relatively low light is annoying, because someone is always out of focus or has their eyes closed, but at least these girls are all goofy as fuck so even the awkward photos are pretty fun anyway.

And as per usual there are some exclusive, slightly more explicit, shots on Girls of Driven By Boredom which you could sign up for if you wanted. Just saying.

Now click here to see the NSFW photos of Khloe Kapri, Kasey Warner & Damia.

Savage Apple Release Party – 5.22.19

Sailor Jerry is one of my oldest clients and for the first time in the 9 years that I have worked with them they released a drink. The other night as part of a Fleet Week celebration at Lucky Strike they debuted their first flavored rum, Savage Apple. I didn’t actually work the party, but I had to finish a couple of rolls of film so I could get them developed so I figured why not hang out, get a free tattoo and take a few photos in the process.

Speaking of free tattoos, Three Kings was on hand doing Sailor Jerry tattoos for party goers. I got a little snake from Alex who I have known since way back when Three Kings had their first anniversary party and I shot it for Inked Magazine. It was cool to finally get tattooed from him even if it was late night in a dark bowling alley with tons of free rum on hand.

There was also free SJ rum raisin ice cream from Van Leeuwen ice cream which honestly tasted more like a Cinnabon than it did normal rum raisin ice cream but it was fucking good even if it fucked up my diet. There was free food too which I managed not to eat so I have no real opinion on that, but it was a good party.

Oh right, and there was bowling so this seems like a good opportunity to discuss my hatred for bowling. Given infinite attempts I could not possibly hit a home run off an MLB pitcher, I could not dunk a basketball, I could defend a pro hockey player or run over a NFL linebacker. Yet, I have, on many occasions bowled a strike. Bowling is about consistency and nothing is as boring as being consistent. Even golf requires a varied skill set and some sort of athleticism. Still, after a few Savage Apple drinks it appears people had a lot of fun bowling and who am I to judge?

Okay, that’s it. Go look at these film photos I shot. It’s a mix of the very end of a roll of Fuji Superia 1600 that was shot on a Nikon SLR and most of a roll of Kodak 400 shot on my point & shoot GR1 so it’s a pretty small gallery, but at least it’s something different to look at. I gotta change it up once in a while.

#StopTheBans Protest – 5.21.19

Yesterday I went to the Planned Parenthood #StopTheBans protest at Foley Square. I wasn’t shooting it for anyone, I was just there to show my support for the right of women to make their own choices about their own bodies. I believe that healthcare should be a right and that includes all manor of reproductive care including abortion. That being said, I am not going to sit here and lecture you about a women’s health issue, I will just say that as someone whose livelihood depends on women I think it’s important to stand up (behind them) for their rights.

When I go to protests I usually bring my camera because I don’t know how to not take photos of things, but I was mostly listening to the speakers and not taking photos. I took a few when I got there and a few on my way out but mostly I was just there to listen. Of all the speakers, Gloria Allred was the most impactful to me. She had me in tears talking about her assault which led to an illegal abortion that she almost died from. Other speakers included the head of Planned Parenthood NYC, Comptroller Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Mayor Bill De Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray and many others.

As I said, I didn’t shoot a ton of photos and I had to leave a little bit early, but I am glad I went. If you want to help stop these insane abortion bans please consider donating to the ACLU who will be fighting them in court, NARAL via my Facebook birthday fundraiser thing, and of course Planned Parenthood

Jade Baker

I met Jade Baker on Twitter because I kept seeing her liking my Tweets and then I would go lurk her profile and I did this like 5 times before I realized that I had lurked the exact same person 5 times and clearly she was someone I should be following because if just her Twitter avatar got my attention, clearly she had something going for her.

A few months later I was in LA and she was one of the first people I hit up. I had to shoot her and I am super glad I did because we took a ton of great photos. She ended up in my last book and then I randomly ran into her in Vegas and we took some nice photos in all of 5 minutes while she was going to grab something from her hotel room.

Long story short is that she is real pretty and I am psyched she exists because we keep taking good photos and hopefully we will continue to do so in the future. I got a big list of people to bother next time I am in LA and she is real high on it.

Oh, I should probably mention that there are a number of extra explicit photos of her on Girls of Driven By Boredom that you could look at if you were inclined. All the photos are in much higher resolution and they’ve been on there for more than 24 hours. Girls of DBB always gets the photos first. Go sign up. It’s cheap and keeps me from having to get a real job.

54 Photos I Don’t Hate

A few months ago I posted on here about a Kickstarter I did for a book of photos I don’t hate. I wanted to do a small project for Kickstarter’s Make 100 project where you create an edition of just 100 copies of something. It’s basically a creative prompt they do every year and I thought it would be a fun thing to do using photos I had already shot so it wouldn’t be a ton of work. It was still a bunch of work but I shipped it on time and made a little money and created something I am proud of so it all worked out.

I finally shipped the last of the books this week. I did a special edition of 25 that came with one of 5 prints and they came in some special packaging that I couldn’t silkscreen until I made sure the books and prints fit inside the envelopes. They ended up looking really great and hopefully everyone who spent the extra money on the special edition feels like it was worth it. The special edition also had 4 extra pages and even a different name

Since the book has come out, a ton of people have asked me about getting a copy but since I only made 125 copies it’s all sold out (well almost, I have a few extras but not selling them in case anyone’s book gets lost in the mail). I still want people to see this thing so I decided just to upload a gallery of all 54 photos in the special edition.  If you have the regular edition you can try and figure out which 4 photos you don’t have. You could then print them out and glue them into the book like some sort of maniac.

In related news, I just printed a dozen new postcards and probably half of them are from this book. If you want to get a set of 13 postcards you can do so here. They ship after May 17th.

Okay, so that’s a wrap on this project. If you got a book I hope you love it and if not I hope you dig the photos. Check out the gallery of 54 images below.
