Ninjasonik – 3.18.10

First of all, I gotta apologize for missing Ninjasonik’s record release party. I hear it was epic. I was on the way to the show but I had to stop off at Ryan Keely’s apartment first.  When I got there I realized I didn’t have my wallet so I was going to have to go all the way back to Brooklyn, get my wallet, and then go to the Ninjasonik show.  I would have been really late and really frazzled. So instead I just hung out with Ryan while she was packing for a feature dancing tour.  Plus she fed me, and while it’s not every day the Ninjas release a record, it’s not every day that a Penthouse Pet feeds you tortillas.  So sorry guys..

Anyway, I only got to see Ninjasonik play once at SXSW even though I saw them pretty much every day. I have to think I picked a pretty good show. After Hollywood Holt killed shit right before they went on Beauty Bar’s security was flipping out a little bit, and probably for good reason.  They whole NYC crew was in there and people were all over the stage. A video camera almost got smashed and I thought the stage might cave in. Antwan and Holt and Roofeo were crowd surfing and the whole thing was off the chain.  Last time I was at Beauty Bar Austin to see Ninjasonik they cut them off mid set, this time the Ninjas were in control and with the help of Johnny Nelson they took that place apart.  It’s just too bad Bill Murray wasn’t there to see it.

Hollywood Holt – 3.18.10

You know if Bill Murray is there it has to be a good show.

Bill Murray showed up at Beauty Bar in Austin to catch the IHeartComix SXSW Showcase.  He was there for Hollywood Holt’s set but escaped quickly after Holt pointed him out to the crowd.  He instantly got surrounded by cameras and ran out the back.  I didn’t get a shot myself because I had photographed him the day before and he was getting hassled enough.  That being said, there is a pic of him in the way background of one of the last shots in this set. Play some Wheres Waldo and find him for yourself.

Almost more important than Bill Fucking Murray was the fact that Hollywood Holt played a fucking amazing set.  He was jumping into the crowd and going nuts, all with the support of Ninjasonik, Death Set and crew rocking out from the wings.  He repeatedly told the crowd that it was his best show ever and it would be hard not to believe him. It was a seriously amazing performance, and the crowd fucking loved it. As soon as he got off Ninjasonik went on and the party just kept going.  It was one of the best nights I had on my epic spring adventure.

Check out the pictures of Hollywood Holt bringing some Chicago to Austin. The Ninjasonik pics are coming next…

Juiceboxxx – 3.18.10

I saw Juiceboxxx a year ago at SXSW and he got into a fight mid set and ended up finishing half his set covered in blood.  I couldn’t wait to see him again.  This year he was a bit more sedate, but still put on a great show.  He got into the crowd, climbed on things, stood on chairs, sang with two mics at the same time and put on a hell of a performance.  That’s the type of shit I love. If your music is good, Ill buy your record, but I don’t give a shit about most bands unless they can kill it live, and Juiceboxxx does.  Really the whole IHeartComix crew does, which is why I was so looking forward to this party at Beauty Bar.

I have a bunch more to do to day, so I am just gonna keep it moving, but you should check out Juiceboxxx most recent mix tape (I have listened to it 10 times at least) and then you should click this link right here to see the shots of him playing the IHeartComix SXSW Showcase at Beauty Bar Austin.

IHeartComix SXSW Showcase – 3.18.10

I had other plans for today but I bought $600 of Ikea furniture yesterday so I am going to spend all day turning my kitchen into an office. It should be pretty intense.  That means today we are going to kick these two updates from the IHeartComix showcase at SXSW over to you with least resistance and explanation.

IHeartComix had their party at Beauty Bar.  I went over there before realizing I needed to be across Austin to see Hussle Club in less than an hour.  I checked out Juiceboxxx then I booked it over to Hussle Club and came back to catch Hollywood Holt and Ninjasonik.  It was all pretty epic, but while I was there I got several crowd shots that didn’t really have a home in any of the other galleries.

And since I love you guys so much, you get to see all the crowd shots from the IHeartComix SXSW showcase at Beauty Bar by clicking right here.

Music Gym SXSW Music Opening Night Party – 3.16.10

I have been putting up all these spring trip photos all out of order and today will be no exception. I haven’t put up anything from SXSW Music yet, so today I am going to put up the very first SXSW Music pictures I took and the very last.  But for the sake of some sort of delusional organization, let’s begin with the first.

I planned on making it an early night.  I had photographed the film awards and had to be up early to photograph Bill Murray.  I was ready to go home around one AM.  I met the guys I was staying with in Austin over at Pure Volume and they wanted to go to this club Mohawk and I had no choice but to tag along with them.  On the way there I ran in the The Death Set and they demanded I go to Beauty Bar with them.  Who the fuck am I to say no to that? So I told my friends I would meet them at 2 and headed off to Beauty Bar.

At closing time my friends weren’t picking up their phones and I was once again dragged to this music co-op space called the Music Gym. The only time I ever DJ’d in my life was there last November.  I just played YouTube videos while people mingled. Anyway, evendently Franki Chan was doing something with Flosstradamus there and a bunch of us rolled over.  Somehow it cost like $15 or something but Flosstradamus managed to drag most of us in with him.

The party was hot and my friends finally met up with us.  As locals they knew the door guy and got in for $2 which is hilarious.  Why not just get them in for free? $2 just seems really weird. Whatever, I’m ranting.  I wasn’t really planning on shooting because I had so much shit to do allready but things were cooking up pretty good and a lot of my NYC friends were there so I had to take some shots. I had been in Austin for a week with only a handful of friends in town, so when everyone started showing up for the music week, I was ready to party.  I even kissed this cute local girl, but she tragically never called me.

I feel like there are some okay shots here, and probably a few less than okay ones.  I was getting warmed up. Just click here and look at the fucking photos already. I have more work to do…

Lit Lounge’s 8th Year Anniversary – 2.22.10

Every single person I have ever met was at Lit.  If you weren’t there then I we probably haven’t met, or maybe I just didn’t see you.

Monday night was the 8th Anniversary of Lit and possibly the last one if people don’t stop smoking in the back room downstairs.  Lit is getting hassled by the city for that shit, so knock it out.  Everyone complains of “smelling like Lit” anyway.  Let’s keep it open. Lit was one of the first places I ever danced in my life.  I used to NEVER dance (and I very rarely do now) but like 5 years ago I was visiting NYC with my friend Jamie.  I used to visit him at college and I fell in love with one of his friends.  When he graduated I never thought I was going to see her again.  She was moving to NYC and she had a boyfriend and she never seemed to have any interest in me in the first place.  Well when Jamie and I went to NYC we ended up staying with her.  We spent all day in Coney Island and I rode the Cyclone with her.  It was really an amazing day and at the end we went to Lit. It was my first time there and they were spinning old rock and roll and I danced with this girl all night and I finally kissed her and it was one of the best days of my life. Unfortunately, her boyfriend found out and I never really got to see her again after that.  Ironically she is moving and I am going to her going away party tomorrow. It will be the first time I have seen her since I moved to NYC three and a half years ago.

Moving on, enough about my life, let’s talk about the party.  Lit was fucking crazy.  There were so many people there that you could win hipster bingo in about five minutes. You could barely move but some how people managed to stay there all night.  Ron Jeremy was there for some unexplained reason and I heard  he was fucking girls in the back.  It wouldn’t be the first time I have been at a party that Ron Jeremy was fucking girls at. He works for this company Hotmovies.com and I have a bunch free porn cards that Hotmovies gave me last time I was in Vegas and I pulled one out and gave it to him.  He looked super confused. Speaking of porn, the first Burning Angel I ever knew was there. I met her on Make Out Club before she moved to New York and she introduced me to Joanna at SXSW in 2004. I haven’t seen her in like a year so that was cool. In fact, there were probably 20 people there I hadn’t seen in over a year.  It was really awesome. I even got to play with my new telephoto lens a little bit. It was really just a great night and I got home after 7am…

The photos are super crowded, let’s just put it that way. I had to be really close to people.  You can see for yourself if you click right here to see all the picures from the 8th Anniversary Party at Lit.

Romanticide – 2.14.10

Happy Presidents Day.  I celebrated Presidents Day last night at a party that seemed to be thrown for another holiday.  Possibly Chinese New Year…  I am not really sure.

The love themed party was thrown by Bowie Ball chief Deryck Todd and a variety of other odd people including my friend DJ VH1 who demanded I come hang out.  Mike Stewart of Beauty Bar also hosted so I figured I should at least drop by.  The party was pretty fun in the basement of Happy Endings which is saying a lot because the last few times I have been there it has been dead. (I am looking at you 66Sick…). These two kids called Hi Christina were hosting too and they were in charge of cranking up the weirdness.  At one point they made everyone dance to Thriller and molest a disco ball and other things I can’t begin to comprehend.

There are some photos that you could look at though… You can see them all by clicking right here.

Violet Monroe

This is Violet Monroe the amazing Burning Angel I hung out with on New Years… She also is a Gods Girl, but I didn’t know that until like two days ago, so for our purposes she is a Burning Angel and New Years was a Burning Angel party.  I was hanging out with her and Miss Genocide and Miss Genocides husband.  We went over to Beauty Bar and did a crazy photo shoot. For whatever reason some of the Miss Genocide shots were either not very good or just too graphic for this site.  I know you guys like the naked chicks, but I don’t have a lot of interest in spread eagle shots on my R, but not X rated site…  So this photo set is just labeled a Violet Monroe set, but with a guest appearance by the most awesome Miss Genocide.Check the Violet Monroe set by clicking here.PS. I am super busy today because I am in Las Vegas covering two conventions for the Village Voice.  A porn convention and a tech convention. Things will be slow until I get back Wednesday.

NYE 2010 Part 4: MSTRKRFT

I figured the most insane place to be on New Years was Webster Hall.  I was not mistaken.  When I got there I had just polished off my bottle of rum and I was having trouble explaining to the door people at Webster why they needed to let me in for free. Eventually I made it up stairs and went straight to my favorite bartender Kate.  I made a pretty wise decision at that point to switch to water and to try once again to get my shit together.  I made it on stage somehow and I had never seen anything like this.  I have seen MSTKRFT sell out Webster before and it is always madness, but I have never in my life seen so many people so close together dancing so hard. I took more photos of the swarming crowd than I did of MSTKRFT. At one point I pulled out my video camera and Alex English grabbed it from me.  He jumped into the crowd and started filming while crowd surfing. Unfortunately I think I was too drunk to hit record on the camera. I still haven’t looked to see for sure.

That’s when shit got awesome. I decided that I would jump into the crowd with my camera. This was a really dumb idea, but I was really drunk.  I at least had the presence of mind to give DJ RekLES my keys, wallet and phone before going in, but I don’t reccomend to anyone crowd surfing with $2000 worth of camera equipment. It was so packed that there was not much of a risk of being dropped up front, but as I got farther back in the crowd I did come crashing down. They caught me the first time and I went back up, but the second time I crushed a girl, but managed to save my camera. She was pissed but her friend helped me back up and then a bouncer reached across the crowd and pulled me back on stage. I really should have shot the band from the crowd, but I mostly only got shot of the people right below me. When I saw the pictures I was pretty disapointed to see it just looked like I was standing on stage taking the shots except for the occasional shot of my shoes in the frame.  It is pretty hard to compose a shot while drunken crowd surfing.  But at least I went for it right? If anyone finds any shots of me in the crowd, let me know.  I am sure someone took photos of it…

The best part about crowd surfing was that it sobered me enough to get my act together.  Before I went in I could barely stand, after I could almost complete full sentances. With the cold walk back to Lit I was pretty much managably sober by 5am.  After the visit to Beauty Bar and a little felid trip to Bushwick, I was pretty much just hung over when I got home at 10am, but I still couldn’t manage to get to sleep until 1pm.

It was a crazy fucking night and I had a blast at every place I went. I wish all 5 parties could have happened on different nights so I could have spent more than an hour or two at any of them.  There are so many other parties I missed that I wanted to hit up, especially some sick house parties.  If only we could end a decade every night of the week.  Happy 2010 guys. Let’s make the next decade as fun as this one.
