A Few Of My Favorite Things: Klaus Kinski

A Few Of My Favorite Things is a series that appears most weekends on Driven By Boredom. Each week I talk about three of my favorite things from a specific genre of film, music, or something else all together. Each favorite thing is accompanied by a video and a description of why it is one of my favorite things. Click here for more favorites.

Klaus Kinski is one of my favorite actors in theory. The dozen or so film I have seen with him in them I have loved, mostly his films with director Werner Herzog and a number of Spaghetti Westerns. That being said he has made over 100 films and I wouldn’t even know where to start. The films I have seen though blew me away. The 5 films he made with Herzog are generally considered the best of his long career. I got in to both Herzog and Kinski after watching a documentary Herzog made about their “friendship” during those five films called “My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski”. They had a tumultuous relationship at best. On top of film acting Kinski was in many, many plays and wrote one of the most insane books that I have ever read. He also went on public speaking tours where he would just scream at the audience about Jesus. He also claims to have had sex with both his mother and his daughter (Natasha Kinski). Total fucking nut job, unbelievable actor. Keep reading to find out my three favorite Kinski scenes of all time.

Stupid Hippy

I was up all night Saturday night working on web stuff.  I edited a bunch of the dumb video footage I have and I worked on a sweet Favorite Things about Patrick Dempsey.  That will be sweet.  I also was looking at the first few months of this site in from Spring of 2001.  I am going to start putting some of that really old content up maybe.  If it is any good.  I also watched Julian Donkey-Boy again and it was way better than I remember it being.  Although it was the first time I developed my man-crush on Werner Herzog.   I am not sure my point of this blog except I guess to put up the most pointless of the videos I made the other night.  I shot this video at an anti-war protest in Washington, DC in probably 2002 or something.  I don’t actually remember.  What I do remember was that it was so cold that my feet were completely numb from standing on the frozen ground.  It was one of the coldest days I can remember.  I also remember watching two riot cops sit and point out protesters wearing Nike and making jokes about sweat shop labor and globalization.  You know you are in DC when the cops make WTO jokes.  Anyway, the point is some asshole was standing in the middle of the DC Mall wearing just underwear asking people to “sign his petition for peace”.  I mean I am all anti-war and stuff, but you sir are a total douche bag.  It was probably 10 degrees below 0 or something.  That is about as moronic as the ad I saw on craigslist looking for “Seeking Nonsmoking & Non-beef eating Activist/Dogwalker/Catsitter“.  Try to read that rambling post and then have a good fucking laugh.  People like that make me want to vote for Mitt Romney and burn homeless people with money.

Rescue Dawn

As you probably know by now from reading this blog, my favorite director is Werner Herzog. I am sort of obsessed with him. Anyway his first “fictional” film since 2001 came out yesterday. It is called Rescue Dawn and it stars the amazing Christan Bale and the often hilarious Steve Zahn. The thing about Herzog’s films are that the documentaries have moments of fiction and the fictional films are filmed like documentaries. This one was based on my favorite of his documentaries, Little Deiter Needs To Fly, about a pilot who is imprisoned in a POW camp in Laos in the late 60’s. Everyone I saw Recuse Dawn loved it, and while it was more commercial than most of his films held true to the Herzogian cannon. The only noticeable difference was its lack of slow sweeping landscape shots. They were missed, and the film was faster paced than I am used to for a Herzog film. Oh yeah, and there was also a pretty cheesy Hollywood ending… that being said, the film is way better than anything else in the theaters right now and would be a good introduction to Herzog for people who keep to the multiplexes. So, go see it, now. Lots of explosions and guns and gross bugs! Woo…

Roxy

Meet Roxy. Photos taken in the upstairs Annex bathroom during Lewd last week.

Photos removed at Roxy’s request.

So probably no updates today because I am watching like 5 Werner Herzog films at Film Forum all day.
