Chief Is Getting High

So yeah. I invented the future of music. You can thank me later. It is called “PopHouse”. It is just house music with inappropriate pop vocals all over it. I convinced Cobra Krames to give me a beat he was working on for me to give to Teddy Blanks. Teddy wrote some vocals and sent it back and after a few back and forths they had something that we liked so much that Krames got HallCall, HeartMe! and DJ Wool to do some sick remixes for an iTunes/Amazon release. Well that release is out now and you need to check it out. Below I have posted this little video Krames shot on a train so we could have something to post since we don’t want to give out the Mp3 release out for free. Also as a bonus Krames did a Mash-up of Chief Is Getting High vs. Party Works by Donnis.

PS. If any DJ’s wanna get on this PopHouse tip, let’s make it happen. This is clearly the future of music, and I want to be mentioned on the wikipedia page.

Teddy Blanks Tonight!

Teddy Blanks might be the best front man I have ever seen and I am going to get to see Teddy Blanks do a solo set for the first time ever. I posted a flyer for his first show, but I was in LA. Tonight he is going to be in Greenpoint at CoCo 66 at nine tonight. My guess is he will play between nine and ten thirty but I really don’t know. The show is $7 and I don’t have a list or anything, but you guys should really come. It might change your life a little bit. He will be singing to video/music tracks that he plays out of an old television set or something nuts like that. I have heard about it, but I am excited to see it live. Evidently his first show went really well, probably because so many of you guys made it out right? Come hang out tonight, my parents are in town, maybe they will be there… I will introduce you.

Anyway, I hear Patrick Cleandenim is really good, but I can’t vouch for anyone else on the bill and rumor has it that Teddy WILL be doing a Michael Jackson cover… Get fucking excited.

Here is one of the video tracks that he plays while he does his thing (via his Facebook site).

Teddy Blanks Does Moz

My friends at the Music Slut are slowly releasing a Morrissey tribute album for his 50th birthday, Every day until his birthday they are releasing a MP3 of one their favorite bands covering a Moz or Smiths’ song. My friend Teddy decided to cover the Smiths song called Girlfriend In A Coma. Personally I sort of hate Morrissey, but I love Teddy Blanks and I love the Music Slut kids so check out the track below. It is pretty fun. And check out the Sluts write up here.

Oh yeah, FYI, Teddy also designed the album cover.

Somewhat Hasty: The Return Of Teddy Blanks

 somewhat_hasty.jpg

This is going to be the only post today.  It is important enough that I take a break to make sure this stays at the top of the page all day.

I have mentioned The Gaskets many times on this page.  They were my life for 4 years.  In Richmond, VA in 2003 I had a friend call me down to a bar cause I “had to see this band”.  It was a shitty bar that’s only draw was that you could be 18 and be there and it was right next to the college.   Most nights they had Karaoke or some lame open mic night but this night was different.  When I got to the bar, these two 18 year old kids were setting up.  I sat down and was talking to my friends when the started to play.  Pretty much everyone in the bar was talking to their friends.  This was the type of place you go to hear music in the background, not to watch a show. There was no stage, no real sound system… just a beat up PA resting on the floor where they had lunch tables set up during the day.  People slowly stopped talking as they began to stare mouth agape at this kid holding the mic.  By the second song not one person was not transfixed on these kids. It was just two kids, two mics and a out of date Yamaha sequencer blowing peoples minds.  All I could think of his how these kids were playing the wrong venues and I wanted to help.  I remember thinking that my only goal was to get them into a packed room of hundreds of people who were there just to see them, who knew every song.  I wanted to be in that crowd.

In January 2006 I was in that crowd.  I was standing in front of over 500 people packed into a venue that had a maximum capacity of 300. I was introducing the band that I had spent 3 years working for.  I had taken them from open mic nights to being one of the most popular bands in Virginia. It was The Gaskets CD release party and it was the high point of their career.  We spent most of the bands savings making a live DVD of that show.  I produced the entire thing.  It is the thing I am most proud of in my life and I hope one day to be able to show it to my kids.  That shouldn’t be too hard, considering I have 700 of them sitting in my kitchen.  I completely overestimated peoples desire to watch a 60 min concert film.  Soon after Teddy moved to Connecticut to work for a graphic design firm, I moved to New York and Ross got a full time job.  They started playing once a month, then once every two months and all of a sudden a year had gone by…

Teddy Blanks was the quiet one.  The singer of the Gaskets rarely socialized with people at shows, he would rather read a book than get drunk at an after party and he was the last person you would expect to do the things he does on stage.  Teddy is one of, if not the best, front men I have ever had the pleasure to see play.  He has the ability to get any crowd, no matter how indifferent, to become involved in his show.  I have seen him turn a crowd of nothing but 15 year old metal fans. I have seen him play his heart out for two people in an empty room.  I once saw him sell 7 CD’s to 8 people during an acoustic set in a dorm room.  When I first met him, I didn’t think he was very much fun.  To this day I think he has a strange aversion to fun.  But over the years he has become one of my closest friends and I could sit in a room do nothing but talk to him for 12 hours straight and not get bored.  He is one of the most talented people I have ever met.  He accells at everything he does from music, to writing, to graphic design.  His music takes all those things into consideration.  His melody are revoltingly catchy, his lyrics are thought out and often profound and the design elements in everything he puts out is carefully considered and masterfully done.  I could not be more proud to be working with Teddy.

To get to the point, after all that sappy bullshit is that Teddy is releasing today his first solo work since he was 16 years old.  He is in the process of working on an EP and has been in and out of the studio over the last several months.  He just moved to NYC and quit his graphic design job and is ready to devote himself fully to rocking the fuck out.  He is hoping to release his EP in late May and is going to be playing live as early as May 1st.  In order to build up some buzz for the EP today we are releasing a stand alone single called “Somewhat Hasty“.  It is a free Mp3 only release and will not be on the upcoming EP.  He also recorded a B-Side to the album, a cover of Frank Black’s song Headache.  Both these songs are available as free downloads, or streaming at BlanksSpace.com.  They are also available directly below this post.

Now what I am asking for is help.  We are trying to generate some buzz and trying to come up with ideas for ways to do that.  We also really want feedback.  He is going back into the studio very soon and he really wants to know what people like and people don’t like.  Clearly if anyone has a blog you are welcome to post these tracks.  We would really appreciate it in fact.   Also obviously if anyone has any interest in things like booking, releasing his EP, paying him 100k to write commercial jingle please let us know about that too.  You can just leave a message in the comments section, contact me here, or hit Teddy up on MySpace.  Thanks a ton.

PS. If anyone wants a Gaskets live DVD and will actually watch it, I will give you one for free.  Just get at me.

3 Things Of Note

Due to all the SXSW photos I am trying to catch up on, some things are getting lost in the cracks…. Have them all here in this manageable single serving blog post:

1. WLTF #4 just came out. I have a photo in this issue. The magazine has a lot to do with sex, hence the title “Would Like To Fuck” and the shots I have had in WLTF in the past have been of sexual nature. The one I have in this issue however is not. I think you should check it out. It is a pretty great shot. That being said, even though my image is safe for work, the rest of the magazine is not. You have been warned.

2. I am sure you guys know this by now, but I managed a band called The Gaskets for five years. They broke up about a year ago and due to some weird fluke that I cannot explain their CD’s are selling on Amazon for insane amounts of money. Okay, I am sure no one is actually going to pay $188 for a Gaskets record, but it is for sale for that price. This is pretty amusing to me. If anyone wants to pay $100 for a Gaskets CD, let me know and I will sell you my copy. Save on shipping!

3. I went to a taping of the Colbert Report. I had never done any thing like that. It was a crowd of mostly tourists and all of them were really, really excited to be there. My friend Bailey got VIP passes from her boss. We are both fans, but neither of us have cable so it’s not like we are obsessed. VIP just meant we didn’t have to wait in line and we got seated first. But it is a small audience so there are really no bad seats. When you first come in you have to go through airport like security and then they cage you in this little holding pen. I cannot imagine it passes fire code as there were over 100 people in a room about the size of my kitchen. After waiting for an hour you get brought into the studio which is pretty amazing. A warm up comic comes out and then Steven comes out, people go crazy and then it is all down hill from there. The warm up comic was pretty great, I wish I could remember his name so I could link him. It is a pretty good room to work in, but still he was pretty on point. Then Steven comes out and answers questions out of character to “humanize himself” then you get to watch him put on his make up and set up everything. The first time this happens it is pretty entertaining, but during each commercial break it gets less and less interesting. The high light was watching Steven and Jon Stewart joke around before Stewart does the Colbert lead in at the bottom of his show. It is during the last commercial of the Daily Show and they were pretty hysterical. That stuff is not in character and is pretty great. Then the show starts. The main problem with it is that you want to be watching the monitors the whole time because they have the graphics, which completely defeats being at the taping so you keep trying to watch him live and then you get distracted by the cameras and the graphics you are missing. Then you break for 5 minutes before the next segment. The whole thing is just really distracting so it is hard to get into the show. Still, it was a fun experience to do once, and the interview with Biz Stone from Twitter was pretty interesting. I Twittered about it while it was happening. Anyway, watch the show below, you can sort of see me when the camera pans the crowd at the beginning. Get excited.

Introducing Teddy Blanks

As you may know, I managed a band called the Gaskets for 5 years. They are currently taking a break, possibly forever. Since the break lead singer Teddy Blanks, who’s birthday just happens to be today, has been working on new music. He has about 5 or 6 songs that he has done very rough demos, but he recently bought a studio mic and has been recording some better quality demos. One of my favorite songs that he has done was called “The Itch” which is a song based on a New Yorker article. The article was about a woman who contracted HIV and developed an itch on the inside of her head. She would wake up at night bleeding from scratching her head in her sleep. One night she scratched into her brain. The article was horrifying and one of my favorite New Yorker stories ever. Teddy made a great song out of it. I decided to send the song to the author of the article and he loved it. The New Yorker contacted Teddy and I last week about it and Teddy did a new demo, set up a myspace page and the New Yorker blog wrote about the song. So check out the blog here. And his Myspace page here.

He is currently working on a solo album which he starts recording in December and is working with Cobra Krames on a 4 song EP collaboration. Their first song comes out on a Krames Mix Tape to be released in the hopefully near future. I will certainly be blogging about that.

BLU Vs. Gaskets

I have seen pretty much every blog on the planet post the MUTO animation by the extremely talented artist BLU. Every time I see it I am reminded of a video by The Gaskets that is done in a similar style of painting and then panting over to create animation. The Gaskets video is not nearly as impressive of course, but I love it and I figured I would post them both back to back for a nice Sunday throw away post and then I am off to shoot some events for the VillageVoice.com which I am pretty excited about. See you at Trash Vs. Rated X tonight at Don Hills?

Gaskets Photo Published

I managed The Gaskets for 5 years and during that time I probably took over 1000 photos of them… maybe more.  I have had a ton of those published in all sorts of magazines and weeklys and such.  In a recent article on the band for Richmond, VA’s Style Weekly I was asked for a photo of the band.  I sent them what is probably the best photo I took of them (at least best live photo) in all those years.  Style’s art director thought the photo wouldn’t print well and we argued back and forth and eventually I photoshopped the hell out of it until Teddy was glowing, and he accepted it.  Unfortunately, he was right, it printed way too muddy and didn’t look great.  Luckily, you can see the original here.  The published image is below.  Click that picture to see the full article in it’s newspapery form.

Gaskets @ Gallery 5 – 2.15.08

The whole reason I took my unreasonably long trip to Richmond was to see the band I manage The Gaskets play a show. It was a benefit show for my friend Kellie Brown who had some minor surgery but she had no health insurance so she had to drop out of school to pay her medical bills. The show raised over $1000 for her, so that was great. Anyway, it was a pretty good show and I got to see a lot of my old friends. Pictures go here.
