Mishka Flagship Grand Opening – 3.13.09

As you may or may not know I shot Mishka’s spring 2009 lookbook.  They were super stressed during the lookbook planning/shoot because at the same time they were getting ready to open their new store.  Well, it’s finally open.  Yesterday they had their grand opening sale/party.  All day they had crazy limited releases and fun things.  Then at 7 they threw a party that eventually moved across the street Trophy Bar.  The store just happens to be 3 blocks from my apartment in southside Williamsburg so of course I had to stop by.  I used it as a chance to shoot some photos without my flash.  I should have brought a faster lens, but I didn’t really think about it.  Still, I think there are a couple nice shots.

Anyway, the new Mishka flagship store is at 350 Broadway.  It is basically at Broadway and Keap.  It is one block from the Hewes JMZ, three blocks from the Broadway G and 9 blocks from the Lorimer L.  Get on it and click click click to see the pictures.

Happy 8th Anniversary Driven By Boredom!

UPDATE: DUE TO MY SERVER BEING DOWN ALL FUCKING DAY YOU CAN CLAIM YOUR FREE SHIRT UNTILL THE END OF MONDAY!

Today is the 8th Anniversary of Driven By Boredom. I know most of you had no idea that I was running this site as a college sophomore way back in 2001. Probably most of you didn’t know that I was old enough to be a sophomore in 2001, but the fact is, I did and I was. The site has changed a lot over the years and I have some exciting announcements.

1. I am starting a group blog. I often have ideas for ways that my friends can contribute to this site, but since no one realy has in the 8 years it has been running I decided not to start now. That is why I am starting a new blog staffed by friends of this site. It is going to have content from a variety of people. It is going to have people who contribute sporadically as well as a small staff of people posting several times a week. I am hesitant to give you any more details as the blog is still being designed. I never like announcing things ahead of time because a lot of times they never work out, but this is a project I have had in my head for a long time and it looks like it is finally coming together. If there is anyone out there who is looking to become a staff blogger for the new site, please contact me. For at least the short term this would be a completely unpaid position but there are some perks. Anyway, I will be posting another blog when the design is finished and I am ready to start gathering content.

2. Free DBB T-Shirts. As you can see below, modeled by Daniel Casanova AKA DJ RekLES, I have made Drivenbyboredom Tshirts. Thanks to Kill Shop Kill we have made 100 free shirts that I will be giving away all this week. We are giving away the shirts (plus some tank tops and tote bags) at three Drivenbyboredom Anniversary Parties this week: Tuesday at Disco Down at Happy Endings, Wednesday at Playhouse at Cain and on Friday at Trash downstairs at Webster Hall. If you do not live in the city, or can’t make it out for the next 24 hours 48 hours you can order a free shirt on this site by using the pay pal link below. Come Monday Tuesday morning I am shutting down the Pay Pal for this so you only have today and Monday to get a free shirt. They cost $5 each, but that is only to cover the shipping and Pay Pal costs. Essentially they are free. After today the shirts (assuming we print more) are going to be $15 or $20 each (I need to talk to KSK about this) so get your free one today. More information about the parties will be posted this week.

UPDATE: The free shirts are no longer available online.  Look for them this week at the parties mentioned above and the shirts should be available soon online and at the Kill Shop Kill store in Williamsburg.

About the design: The shirt was designed by Nick The Duke of Cobra Kai based off the Chanel Liquidation by French graffiti artist ZEVS.

Mishka Spring 2009 Lookbook Outtakes

So you remember the Mishka Lookbook that I shot?  You know the one that Kanye blogged about?  Well I took like 1200 photos that night and of course they only used about 25 of them for the book.  There were a lot of fun shots that didn’t get used so I decided to post them here for you.  There is a little bit of gear that didn’t make the book.  Be on the look out for Mishka socks, Miskha backpacks and Mishka pillows!  I need to cop one of those pillows asap.  The night lasted like 7 hours.  We started out shooting just one couple at home getting ready for the night, then we went over to the Mishka office and just for fun I pulled people off to the side and we got some cool white wall stuff.  Then we headed out to the diner where I shot in the cab, and then over to Studio B for some dancin’.  It was a fun night and now you get to see the rest, and the bonus spring wear.

So check out the outtakes from the Mishka shoot.

Playhouse – 2.18.09

Finally I got these photos up the day after I took them.  That has to be a first for Cain.  So when I got there, the place was so packed for the Richie Rich after party that I totally freaked out and nearly had a panic attack.  For someone who does event photography, I really don’t like crowds.  So I just sort of stood off to the side and evidently missed shots of Richie and Pam Anderson.  I am not sure how that actually happened, but clearly I fucked up.  I took shots of people until the room emptied out a bit and I had room to set up the photo booth.  Once I started doing that I got in a much better mood and I got some fun shots.  You can see them all here.

Rebecca Minkoff Handbag And Accessories Presentation – 2.12.09

Last week I was very sick.  The high point of that sickness was at The Rebecca Minkoff presentation at Formula Studios at Milk.  The Le Tourment Vert Absinthe people I worked with at Sundance asked me to cover this event for them at Fashion Week.  I was way too sick to be doing it, but I sucked it up and managed to somehow crawl there.  I think there are some famous people in the pictures but I honestly have no idea because I spent most of the evening trying not to fall over and trying not to look like I was trying not to fall over.  The one thing I do remember is that I had an unnecessarily long conversation with Albert Hammond Jr and Agyness Deyn about Wikipedia.  Also as we were leaving the elevator was taking forever which lead to a conversation about jumping out the window, which led to a conversation about the french free running sport parkour which eventually led to me, in my sick addled state, to decide that I would slide head first down a rather long banister.  This seemed to go well until my camera bag slipped off my back and pulled me off the banister with it.  Luckily I am impervious to embarrassment or such a thing would have been awkward in a normal situation, especially in front of a rock star and a super model (as well as several other people.)  Woops.

Check out all the shots of people drinking delicious green absinthe here.

Driven By Dunks

Thanks to the wonders of NikeID, this website now has an official shoe.  The shoe is red and black to match the sites first layout, the only one I designed myself.  The shoe has BORED burned into it over and over again and on the back of the shoe it says EST. 2001.  My site opened officially on March 1st 2001.  They are Dunk High Be True’s and completely sick.  I might wait till spring to really start rocking them on the regular, but I will probably wear them a few times in the near future.  I hope you are as excited as I am.  Sick.

Dave Hill’s Fashion Week

The first time I saw Dave Hill do stand up about two years ago he showed a video of him interviewing people at Fashion Week.  It pretty much blew me away.  Yesterday I got an email from him with the newest video in his Fashion Week series.  I think you need to check it out as it is once again amazing.  In fact, I am posting the newest one on top and then the older ones below.  Make sure you check Dave Hill online here, or if you speak Japanese here.

New York Couture Fashion Show – 9.10.08

The New York Couture was pretty much the only fashion week event I went to last season. I sort of hate fashion, but I am sort of friends with a lot of the models that do shows like this so I had to show up. The problem is for the second season in a row I showed up late. I thought to show up early but I had to flavor trip with my roommate (more on that later) and couldn’t find parking and ended up getting there 10 min before 11. Luckily the show didn’t start until a while after 11, but unluckily the door girls had gone inside and I didn’t get a VIP bracelet until 10 min after the show started. I was relegated to the front and side of the stage so I missed all the posing and didn’t really have time to fuck with my lighting. That being said, I sort of thing runway photos are just not my thing anyway, and most of the good shots from last night were taken after the show. With the exception of some possibly questionable make up choices it seemed the show was a great success and fun was had by all. After the show they let just random people walk the cat walk as the after party raged on and that was pretty hilarious.

Dig on the photos.

Oh, one other funny thing to mention. Mansion is sort of a trendy bottle service type club and I was wearing a cut off Michael Bolton t-shirt and Zach Morrisesque 1980’s sport jacket that is far too small for me and I thought I was going to get hassled getting in. Instead the door guy didn’t ask if I was on the list or ID me, he said “I love your shirt!” and just let me in in front of several other people. It was pretty hilarious.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Never Looked So Beautiful – 9.8.08

So Semi Precious Weapons, Mac, and Page 6 all got together and threw some sort of shin dig at Rebel. I got off work an hour early so I could show up. I took some really bad photos of SPW but then I hung out for a while and I got some okay shots and good times were had. Evidently the cast of the Real World Brooklyn was there and it was suggested by the powers that be that I get some shots of them. However, they would not let me take their photo as they were under contract and could only take photos with these little cameras that Mtv had given them. They seemed to feel pretty bad about this, as I am sure anyone who would go on the Real World must love having their picture taken. One of them whispered to me that I should just take photos of them when they were dancing and stuff. At some point Justin from SPW came over and started a scene of some sort and Mtv started filming and pretty much everyone in the place gathered about this little corner of the room and it was packed and crazy. Nicky and I were standing over there and got some shots of the madness. At one point I got Justin to crowd surf. I turned to one of the Real World guys and said “Something insane needs to happen now…” But it never really did. It ended as quickly as it began, but there was a lot of making out and screaming. Despite my hatred for reality television I had a pretty good time and they all seemed like decent people. I mean I am sure if I ever see an episode I will hate them all, but in real life they were pretty fun. Anyway, I just hope I don’t show up on TV as I am a fucking mess these days. I think I need to perm my hair, 70’s porno style. Anyway, the photos are here. I need to go to sleep.

Update: Evidently in the top photo a possibly gay, possibly engaged mormon named Chet Bannon Cannon is kissing a previous winner of America’s Next Top Model named Whitney Thompson. Evidently this is important enough to warrant coverage from Gawker and the Daily News. Fun. Update again: Gothamist and Village Voice… Since I work pretty regularly for the voice, I gave them a little interview, so you should read that.
