A Few Of My Favorite Things: Commercial Jingles

A Few Of My Favorite Things is a series that appears most weekends on Driven By Boredom. Each week I talk about three of my favorite things from a specific genre of film, music, or something else all together. Each favorite thing is accompanied by a video and a description of why it is one of my favorite things. Click here for more favorites.

Last week I talked about how I couldn’t find my very favorite commercial jingles and I still can’t, but I did find some pretty great ones. The ones I can’t find were local DC commercials that I grew up with and the old AutoZone commercial which was sweet, but does not seem to exist on the internets. I did find some good stuff. Also, I just wanted to give a shout out to the Human Giant sketch that inspired todays post…. and part 2. Lastly I wanted to mention that this might be the last Favorite Things for the next two weeks because I will be out of town. Anyway, keep reading to listen to some amazing commercial jingles!

1. Nintendo Cereal
To this day I know every word to this song. It was so hot. The cereal came in two pouches. One pouch was full of Mario Brothers cereal and the other was full of Zelda cereal. Zelda only gets one line in the song, but it was still equally represented in the box. Nintendo i’s a cereal WOW! What could possibly be better than a fruit flavored crunch? Delicious.

2. Kit Kat
The version of this commercial that I loved was from the 80’s. Evidently they redid the extended jingle in the 90’s but it just was way more gay. This version is all techno pop or something. I am not sure, but at least you get the sweet breakdown. We love that shit. I also love that “break me off a piece of that…” call and answer part at the end. That baritone is oh so sweet.

3. McDonald’s Menu Song
The only reason this is #3 and not #1 is because it is not actually a jingle. This was this promotional record that came free in the newspaper. It was a contest, if the song finished playing you won a million dollars. My friend Michael and I memorized it and did it for our school talent show in the second or third grade. We were beat out by kids who did the Turtles Rap from the first Ninja Turtles Movie (not the Vanilla Ice song from the sequel) and a ballerina. Bullshit. I still remember all the words today.
