Finally a few months ago we found a time to shoot. I was headed over to her place but because of train traffic I had to transfer three times and take a bus to get to her house. By the time I got there the sun was going down. I thought we were doomed for another failed photo shoot. Fortunately she was totally ready to go when I got there and we found that if she got VERY close to the window I could still get some shots while the sun went down. We did the whole shoot in ten minutes and I was out the door and headed back home this time via a cab.

Hopefully we will one day get to do a shoot in a more ideal situation, but shots on the fly like that are my bread and butter and I think I got some nice shots you guys will dig.

Road Trip Update: We hit $2100 last night! Just another $900 til we reach our goal! Either way, I am headed off on my trip on June 22nd. Help me afford life on the road for a month and I will send you some rad stuff!

On top of that Sailor Jerry brought out Matt Van Cura from Invisible Ink NYC to do slightly larger Sailor Jerry pieces on bands, journalists and friends of the Sailor Jerry crew. The drummer from Foxygen got one of the most confusing tattoos I have ever seen which was “Tom Jones” written in script under the letters DC. Evidently there is a DC Sailor Jerry flash that you can write any name in. I have no idea what the DC means and I have less of an idea why he would get Tom Jones as the name. It’s pretty amazing/hilarious especially because it’s his only tattoo. Nightlife legend Steve Lewis, artist Buff Monster and Inked Magazine’s creative director Todd Weinberger all left with Van Cura pieces.

The party was a great time with tons of cute tattooed girls ever, delicious hot dogs, cheap Sailor Jerry rum and lots of bowling, but after seven hours of tattoo madness I was ready for bed… but instead I went to The DL and shot another party until 4 in the morning. So THIS Wednesday I came back and I brought my camera. I really like mixed crowds and The DL has a lot of different types of people hanging out. It reminds me of “Playhouse” which was one of my favorite parties until I got screwed out of $650. I think you will get the idea when you see the pictures, but the best parties bring different subcultures together and mix ‘em all up and I think “Wednesdays” has that going for it.

The highlight of the night was seeing a bunch of old friends and partying like it was 2008 and the lowlight was forgetting I am borrowing a car and leaving it at the club and taking the Subway home. Whoops.

Now I am going to go back to convincing people that they should give me money to go on vacation and you should go look at the pictures!

Mabel is totally awesome and we hit it off right away. We ended up doing the photo shoot and then going across the street and eating at Olive Garden with a mutual friend of ours. I think it was only the second time in my life I had ever been to Olive Garden but it was surprisingly delicious and I took photos of Mabel’s boobs under the sign.

After our Olive Garden throw down we met up with another mutual friend Pam and instead doing a nice photo shoot of the two of them like we planned, they got really drunk and I took photos of them eating Taco Bell.  The whole thing was awesome and Mabel and I kept in touch and she actually hung out with me on my birthday the other night and yelled at me for not putting up these photos yet so here they are. I think it’s going to be pretty awesome and I have some cool ideas for it assuming I still have some money left over when I get back. So I set up an Indiegogo crowd funded thing for it. My friend Lunchbox hosted the Disgraceland Family Freak show and the Disgraceland Hook Squad did some terrifying flesh pulls including one where Lunchbox attached a hook through his balls and my friend Sewer Sprite attached hooks to her throat and right above her vagina and it was extremely brutal.

Two things we learned from that: 1) Yes this gallery is extremely NSFW and 2) My friends have absurd names.

Scarlett Storm and Smurfasaur Suicide from the Rigormortis Review did burlesque and got naked a lot and Smurf was involved in the Disgraceland stuff and pretty much all of it was awesome. You can see them naked in places like Bombshell Brats and Suicide Girls if you are into that sort of thing. Personally I hope to shoot them for real for this site soon, but I have been saying that for a while now…

And to end the night Doug Sakmann hosted his infamous Strip for Pain which involved Scarlett and Smurf torturing guys and getting naked. Good times.

The magazine liked his street wear style and I wanted to do something different than just photos in BaoHaus. I had an idea to go down to a sneaker shop like Alife Rivington Club and have him try on shoes or something, but he had a better idea. He wanted to get his nails done. He had never actually had a manicure before but we both thought it was a pretty hilarious concept so we walked down the street to a place and he got his nails did while I took pictures. The whole thing lasted about 15 minutes and then we went back to his restaurant and I took a few more pictures of him there while he made me some food. It was fucking delicious.

Now, more importantly I got back from the Indianapolis 500 yesterday and I have pictures to prove it. A friend in Indy hit me up a few days ago and was like, “You should come to the Indy 500, it’s insane.” At first I kinda laughed it off but then I realized I was borrowing a car and it was only a 12 hour drive so  I hit up a the Village Voice and they wanted the pictures so I had my gas and hotels paid for so I was on the way to Indianapolis.

So I don’t know anything about car racing. Evidently the Indy 500 is Indycar racing and not Nascar. I have been told that Indycar is somehow less rednecky and they don’t have roofs on their cars. I couldn’t tell you any more than that because I was in the middle of this MASSIVE race track that had a golf cart and a rave inside it so I didn’t actually see any racing and I have never watched a race in my life except for the Sports Center highlights when stuff explodes.

Anyway, back to the rave inside the tack… It’s called “The Snake Pit” and it was kinda like a mini EDC or something inside the track except with less music, more patriotism, less drugs and more booze. It was like a frat party, meets a rave, meets a tailgate. Diplo and Afro Jack DJ’d on either side of an awkward bikini contest and there was a slide and a mechanical pig.

Have you ever seen Diplo DJ at 10am? Cause now I have. I’ve seen that dude DJ probably close to 30 times but never before noon. Luckily people were black out drunk by 9am so no one seemed to notice that Afrojack went on at lunch time. The party was totally fucking madness but I didn’t see any cars crash (I didn’t really see any cars) and no one got naked. While this is tragic I did take a ton of photos and I think you will enjoy them no matter what you look for in one of my photo galleries.

Her room was totally insane and there was a party going on in the living room so I just started taking photos. She rolled a cigarette, poured another glass of wine  and started showing me her clothes and her stuff and we just took photos and they started turning out. What started out as me just wanting to get the shoot over with and get out of there turned into one of my favorite shoots in a while. I feel like it’s very personal and real and weird and amazing. Xochitl is strangely beautiful and sort of nuts and really awesome and I had a blast taking  her photo and I hope I get to do it again soon. I think you guys are really going to dig these shots.

In other news, two days ago I decided to shoot the Indy 500 so I am driving to Indianapolis today. Turns out it’s only 12 hours away so fuck it. Let’s get weird. Gonna stop in Pittsburgh tonight and probably stay in Indy til Monday or Tuesday so don’t expect any more updates until I get back. Check my Tumblr for updates while I’m gone!

A month after the storm most of the media was gone. We met people with homes still standing just feet from where their neighbors lost everything. Their homes were flooded, without power and heat and in some cases slightly melted because of the fire. These people felt so lucky to even have a home and even luckier to still be alive. We met people who were still living in their heat free homes in late November despite everything. Not to sound corny but it really was a testament to the human spirit. It was hard not to be inspired by these people, but at the same time the trip was absolutely devastating. I walked around the rubble of the 111 houses and just tried to imagine what I would do if everything I owned was gone.

Since my last post on Roxbury another tragedy has hit this country. Tornados in Oklahoma have left many people homeless and in the same predicament as the residents of Breezy Point. Before you donate to the Red Cross to help the people suffering in Oklahoma think about some things I learned while talking to people from Roxbury and Breezy Point as well as Red Cross workers themselves. The Red Cross is very limited in what they can do for people. They work with FEMA but they can only provide immediate shelter, food and blood for people. They can’t help people rebuild their lives.

Everyone I talked to in Roxbury and Breezy Point recommended donating to Habitat for Humanity. They were on the ground almost immediately helping people gut and rebuild their homes. In this time of need in Oklahoma I would imagine that Habitat would be the ideal charity to support.

I would also like to point out that their is still a lot of work to be done in New York and New Jersey months after hurricane Sandy. If you would like to know how you can help visit the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation.

Back in Dallas, Oliver and his friend Josh Hammertimez host Good Luck Karaoke, which is pretty much like regular karaoke except Josh and Oliver cause a ruckus on stage while you are performing your song. They brought the party to NYC last night and did karaoke until everyone was too drunk to sing anymore. I have seen a lot of karaoke in my life but never as out of control as last night. The Alkaline Trio showed up and Matt Skiba got wasted on Sailor Jerry and decided to play the drums during about ten people’s karaoke sets. It was pretty amazing/ hilarious.

Oliver also brought his friend and co-worker at Elm Street Tattoo, Carl Hallowell, to tattoo Sailor Jerry flash on people while the karaoke madness was going on in the other room. Skiba got a death head moth on his hand, my dude AK Murda got a hinge, Steve Lewis got a pin up, etc. Lot of rad tattoos all around.

Oh, I should probably mention that everyone was wearing wigs all night. Why you ask? I have no idea actually, but it probably has something to do with Oliver’s drag queen Ramones tribute band The Ramonahs. They played a set in the middle of the karaoke party and it was fucking awesome. Oliver does a pretty good Joey Ramone impression only with a mustache and fake tits. Seriously it was wild.

For whatever reason the article never ran and these photos just sat on my hard drive. I knew that I wanted people to see these images but part of me wanted to find a better place to publish them than my website, but something happened recently… I had a really bad day. I had a shoot get canceled, lost a $1000 gig, found out the Village Voice was falling apart, found out I was getting paid $400 less than I thought for a previous gig and my favorite hockey team got bounced from the playoffs later that night. During that 24 hours of bullshit for some reason I kept thinking about the people I met when I was in Roxbury and Breezy Point.

I wondered about them and thought about how much worse things could be for me. I also thought about how resilient people are and how even after losing everything people just carried on as best as they could. I met people still living in their flooded, heat free, electricity free shell of a home who just were just thankful their house wasn’t 20 feet closer to the fire that wiped out 111 homes in Breezy Point. In fact everyone I met would point to someone who had it worse.

I did fundraiser through the Dolfans NYC group that I run and I interviewed several members of our group. To a letter each one of them told me their horror stories about flooding and loss of power and then they would point to another Dofans NYC member who had it worse and how they were the lucky ones. I talked to a friend who lost his vacation home and was just happy it wasn’t his actual home. I talked to someone who lost everything on his first two floors who was just happy to still have a home. When I got to Roxbury they just were happy not to be living a mile down the peninsula. I talked to people in Breezy glad to still have a home and I talked to people in Breezy who had nothing who were just glad to be alive. It was crushing and inspiring.

I did a diservice to these people by not publishing these images and I want to apologize and thank them for their time. I especially want to thank the fireman who took us on a tour of Roxbury. It was such a small community and everyone knew everyone so he could point to each house and tell us a story about the people who lived there. Roxbury FD were the first responders in Breezy Point because the Breezy FD had been evacuated.

I am going to split these photos up into two sections. The first section is from Roxbury. The photos include shots from the Breezy Point Co-Op who had organized donations for the community, photos from the Roxbury Fire Department station and our tour of Roxbury. Later this week I will be posting photos from Breezy Point and the heart breaking devastation there.

But remember people still need help. Hurricane Sandy left hundreds of people without homes. If you want to find out how you can help check out the FEMA Sandy Website. And be thankful for your life no matter how bad it gets… humans can endure almost anything. We are amazing creatures.
