Playhouse – 3.25.09

Let’s take a little break from the SXSW coverage.  I gotta get up the shots from Cain somewhere…

I have to say when I got to Playhouse I didn’t really feel like shooting.  I had just returned home from Texas and after shooting nearly 6000 photos in 5 days I was not looking forward to bringing my camera.  Luckily my camera agreed with me.  After I took about 150 shots my flash decided to die on me.  I didn’t charge my batteries because I had not yet unpacked. They were charged in Texas, but clearly the 2 days uncharged did them in.  I had two sets but the second set was completely dead.  I spent some time shooting with just the on camera flash, so you will notice a difference towards the end of the gallery.  But the whole thing gave me the chance to do something I don’t normally do… hang out.  I actually got to talk to some people and I had a ton of fun.  I even got this cute girls number.  She put her number in my phone as “The cute blonde girl you met at Cain so don’t forget”.  I thought that was kinda brilliant.  Everything dance party oriented is a bit slow during WMC, but Cain was still jumping despite the lower than average turn out.  It doesn’t beat being in Miami for the fest, but Playhouse was fun as hell on Wednesday. Plus despite not shooting as much as normal I still got some great shots.  Check out the photos right here.

Juliette Lewis & The New Romantiques – 3.20.09

The headliners of the West Rocks party was Juliette Lewis with her new band the New Romantiques (No more Juliette & The Licks I guess). I have had a crush on Ms. Lewis as long as I can remember and during CMJ I saw her outside of Arlo & Esme. I had like a 10 minute conversation with her about miracle fruit and other randomness. She hugged me a lot. I sort of fell in love. After her band played I gave her my card as she was leaving and she remembered me which was nice, but I didn’t get to talk to her at all. These lesbian super fans who were there got pictures with her and stuff and were screaming the whole time. And these gay guys yelled out “You made me straight!” She has quite the cross over audience. It was pretty rad. The show itself was nuts. She is super crazy and it was a lot of fun. She was an amazing singer which I am not sure I expected. I expected her to be a great front woman, and she was but as an encore she did a blues song and she fucking killed it. I was standing back stage with a few people when it happened and we were all just staring at each other like “Holy shit.” But yeah, the whole West Rocks show was a lot of fun and I feel like if I am ever in London when their party is going down I will hit that up.

Check out all the Juliette Lewis photos out by clicking here. I don’t know about you, but I am kinda in love.

Semi Precious Weapons – 3.20.09

I had to see my boys Semi Precious Weapons at some point during SXSW and it seemed Beauty Bar was the place to do that. It was really weird to shoot them in the light and my bounce flash turned the tent green, but the show was a lot of fun and afterwords I talked to a bunch of Juliette Lewis fans who were really psyched to know about SPW. I brought a few people who really liked them too. At one point Justin climbed on top of the speakers and sang upside down. That was fun. Anyway, I don’t have a lot to say about them that I haven’t said before, but they did tell me that Perez Hilton came to their late night show that night and evidently loved them. So maybe they will blow up already and I can sell some of these photos.

Check out all the SPW pictures here.

West Rocks Showcase – 3.20.09

So it beings… The first of many, many South By Southwest updates…

Semi Precious Weapons emailed me their SXSW schedule and I was trying to figure out when I wanted to catch them.  I saw that they opened up for Juliette Lewis at Beauty Bar so I decided to check that out.  It was part of the West Rocks showcase. Before Semi Precious went on I got a chance to check out the Golden Animals, Your Vegas, and GoldieLocks.  The drummer from Golden Animals was nuts, and Your Vegas was pretty tight, but GoldieLocks was the only person who really stood out.  She was like a singing Vice “Do” and she made kinda poppy electro rap or something.  It was certainly fun.  While these bands played my friend Michael was busy doing press interviews with the Post War Years.  The odd thing about that is that he is not in the band.  He was just sitting on a couch with the guys and they were interviewing him with the band.  The told the reporter that he played trombone.  I don’t think she believed him, but at he least did a convincing British accent. There are a couple of crowd shots in here as well.  Check out all the photos by clicking this link here.  Semi Precious Weapons and Juliette Lewis photos will be up in a few minutes…

Playhouse Video

If you have been to Cain on a Wednesday in the last couple months you might have seen Dan Baxter hovering around with his video camera. He has been making videos from his collected footage. This is his second in a trilogy I believe. (First one is here.) Evidently the next one has a lot of shots of my anniversary party. This footage makes my life seem really fun I think. I shoot this party every week, but I am not sure I take a lot of time to enjoy it. It is a pretty crazy scene. Check out my photos from Playhouse and come out tonight. It is at 27th between 10th and 11th. It’s a good time.

Also, just FYI, I am still editing 5500 images I shot at SXSW. The updates will start tomorrow… I swear…

Three Kings Anniversary – 3.6.09

A while ago I shot some photos for Inked Magazine. They were taken at Matchless in Greenpoint to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the Three Kings Tattoo studio. Coincidently right after the event I had to go to my website’s 8th anniversary party. Two days before I had been tattooed by Betty Rose and she was there which was cool. As was the Suicide Girl (Calamity) I met at the Glamour Garage fashion show. My friend Minka was there and I hadn’t seen here in a year, and my friend Kari who I had not seen in probably 3 years. I even met a really hot girl who is tight with DBB friend, DAZE. It was just cool seeing all these people I didn’t expect to see. I figured I wouldn’t know anyone but the Inked staff. At the party there was a big cake fight between the Three Kings and a lot of drunken madness. I was only there for two hours before I had to escape to my party but it was a lot of fun. At some point I did some hand stands for a photo booth they had there. I wonder what happened to those. Whatever the case is I like hanging out with tattoo artists because I have a lot of really dumb idea for tattoos, and I need to talk some people into doing them for free.

Anyway, I am watching Myth Busters while I write this so it was probably a bit rambling and pointless. But you can check out all the photos here. While you do that I am going to go back to watching Jamie and Adam try to land a lawn chair using a pellet gun.

My Old Friend Lauren…

The end of my senior year in high school was a crazy time for me.  I took my photo teachers daughter (Libby) to prom and I was super into her until I met this girl Lauren.  I was 18 and they were both 16 and both rad girls but as soon as I met Lauren I pretty quickly lost interest in Libby and didn’t really see her again until several years later.  I had this huge crush on Lauren and she was the first girl I ever snuck into my parents house.  She snuck in the basement window one night and we made out on a couch.  Nothing ever happened between us and I quickly met a girl named Chanelle who became my girlfriend for that whole summer before college.  Chanelle was the first person to ever let me take a naked photo of her and started my love for nude Polaroids, but you can read about that here.  This is about Lauren.

I remained friends with Lauren over the years but I have not seen her a lot of late.  Recently she moved to NYC to stay with her husband’s family while he is working in Iraq as a civilian contractor.  She recently got her own place and edits a popular magazine not to be mentioned here.  She asked me if I would shoot some sexy photos of her for her husband for Valentines Day.  She told me I could put some of them up on this site but only if I let her friend photoshop them.  Now during the process of photoshopping she ended up using some images I had already thumbnailed and there were several drafts of things and they all got mixed up and I jut had a folder of images that look nothing alike. I shot with a flash and without, some were shopped by me, some by both of us and some might not have been done at all.  Honestly I don’t know what happened.  The inconsistency and in some cases a total breakdown in image quality caused the 6 week delay in me getting these up.  There are some good images here but the set as a whole is a big clusterfuck.  Lauren is a rad girl though, and super sexy so I had to get them up at some point.

Also, the NSFW Monday/Friday schedule may come to an end.  I only have one nude set to go up Friday, although I have two in mind this week.  Let’s see what happens. If any girls out there want to shoot something in the next week or two, get at me.

These photos were late due to the fact that my plane back to NYC was delayed and it took me over 2 hours to get home from the Newark airport.

So enjoy the photos of Lauren, and wait until tomorrow for the beginnings of my SXSW coverage!

SXSW Preview

Okay, so here is a preview of some of the stuff I shot at South By Southwest.  I have to give these photos to a lot of people and go through 5500 photos that I took this week so getting these all up will probably take weeks.  I am going to take today off, go to the pool and relax.  16 hours of work a day for 5 days was not exactly a vacation.  I get back late Monday night and I will probably just take Tuesday off to get my NYC life back together, but after that you can probably expect like 5 updates a day until I get all this stuff up.  So anyway, here are some shots.  They are all shots I like, but not the best of the bunch cause I tried to pick images that none of my clients will want to use for anything.  I hope you like them, I will keep you updates.  I am going to go to sleep now; it is 8am.

Free Airwalks

Just a little SXSW update….

Things are completely nuts. I am shooting 1000 photos a day, 17 hours a day. I have been on my feet from noon to five every day. Total fucking madness. I haven’t taken a shower yet, I am sleeping on a gross couch and I haven’t made out with anyone in days, but I have taken a lot of rad photos, met a ton of people and my arms are covered in wrist bands. My cell phone keeps dying, my Twitter keeps fucking up and my text messages keep disappearing. I am shooting stuff for Brooklyn Vegan, Flavorwire, The Village Voice, Inked Magazine and as of today the Vice blog. The first published stuff is up today on Flavorwire… Check that shit out. I have seen the Circle Jerks, Ninjasonik twice, Lucero, Semi Precious Weapons, Juliette Lewis, Daniel Johnston, Hearts Revolution about probably 50 other bands. It has been nuts. It is going to take forever to get these photos up.

Anyway, I just wanted to give a shout out to AirWalk who gave me these free shoes. I pretty much only wear high tops so I was pretty psyched I could get some high tops. I used to wear AirWalk back in the day. Have you guys ever read Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. There is pretty much a whole chapter about the rise and fall of the brand. But they are bringing shit back, doing the branding, getting the name out. They are bringing back some retro styles. They got some low top boots that they did for the Beastie Boys. Pretty sick shit. Anyway, check out the kicks I got. Hopefully I can score some free pants tomorrow.
