A Few Of My Favorite Things: Football Plays

A Few Of My Favorite Things is a series that appears most weekends on Driven By Boredom. Each week I talk about three of my favorite things from a specific genre of film, music, or something else all together. Each favorite thing is accompanied by a video and a description of why it is one of my favorite things. Click here for more favorites.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday. In honor of this greatest of holidays I am going to be talking about three great football plays. Now, because of NFL’s fascist control over their highlights I can’t show you my favorite plays… or the favorite NFL moments I have had… in fact, I am not even going to be able to show you all of the plays that I am going to talk about. One of these clips is going to be from Tecmo Bowl. Anyway, I am sort of obsessed with football. I try not to mention it on here too much, but I do run a Miami Dolphins website (Bonus Link: me talking Dolphins football on FinsRadio.com) As you may or may not know, the Dolphins are the only team to have gone undefeated. Today our devision rivals, the New England Patriots attempt to become the first team since the Dolphins did it in 1972 to win every game. This I am not happy about. So I am root, root rooting for my home team and praying that some how the Giants can win this game. It is not likely, but I pray. Anyway, all my favorite football moments involve the Dolphins, and there are almost no Dolphins highlights online, so instead I am going to bring you three amazing football plays, for three different reasons. Keep reading to find out which.

1. Cal Golden Bears Vs. Stanford Cardinal- “The Play”
By many considered the greatest college football play of all time. In 1992 John Elway was playing his last home game against Cal. The two teams were big rivals and while Cal was out of Bowl contention Elway was playing for a chance to go to the Hall of Fame Classic Bowl. With :53 seconds left in the game Elway and Stanford were down 19-17. Elway drove Stanford down the field and with four seconds to go in the game Stanford kicked an almost game winning kick to make the score 20-19. On the kick off following the field goal the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-wrenching, exciting thrilling finish in the history of college football happened.

2. Buffalo Bills VS. Tennessee Titans – “The Music City Miracle”
While “The Play” might be the greatest football play in history, I was two when it happened. In fact until YouTube came along I had only heard about it. The Music City Miracle I witnessed first hand. In January of 2000 I was in college, but I was home visiting my then girlfriend. I had stopped by what we called “the crack house” which was the house all my friends got fucked up at during high school. I remember going over there for just a few minutes, but the very end of the Bills / Titans game was on. It was the play offs, and I can’t stand the fucking Bills so I was just watching the last few minutes just to root against them before I went home. They had just scored with 16 seconds to go up one point in the AFC Wild Card game. 15 seconds and a questionable lateral later the Titans had won the game. It was the most exciting Non-Dolphins play I had ever, and still have ever seen.

3. Miami Dolphins Vs. New York Jets – “The Spike Play”
Now the greatest play I have ever witnessed HAD to be a Dolphins play. Not only was it the greatest play I have ever witnessed, but it was probably the happiest I have ever been at any point in my life. In November of 1994 I was 14 years old and almost as obsessed with the Dolphins as I am now.. the main difference being that the Dolphins actually won football games then. Anyway, the Dolphins were down 24-6 against the Jets. At the end of the game the Dolphins at won 28-14 which included 4 touchdown passes from my hero Dan Marino to wide receiver Irving Mark Ingram. With only seconds left in the game the Dolphins were driving. With time winding down the Dolphins ran up to the line in order to spike the ball and stop the clock. However, instead of spiking the ball Marino took one look at Ingram and passed him the ball. While the other 20 people on the field just stood there, Marino and Ingram had won the game. It was mind blowing. Unfortunately the NFL has gone out of their way to remove the clip from YouTube time and time again, so this audio replay and Tecmo Bowl reenactment will have to do. Or you could read the NY Times article about the greatest game in my NFL history and the happiest I have ever been in my life.

I was at the aforesaid crack house during the aforementioned Titans game, and I remember thinking there was no way in hell that pass was a lateral, but upon seeing these other nine camera angles, I’m suddenly not so sure.
