A Few Of My Favorite Things: Things Zombies Do

A Few Of My Favorite Things is a series that appears most weekends on Driven By Boredom. Each week I talk about three of my favorite things from a specific genre of film, music, or something else all together. Each favorite thing is accompanied by a video and a description of why it is one of my favorite things. Click here for more favorites.

Welcome to the Halloween edition of Favorite Things, my weekend blog about three things I dig. Today we are talking about zombies. I love zombies. I got into an argument the other day with someone who tried to say that vampires were better than zombies. That is just bullshit. Vampires are fucking boring. If you get eaten by a vampire… guess what? You get to live forever. Get bit by a zombie? You are just constantly hungry for brains and the chances are someone alive, who is much faster than you, is going to come a long with a shovel or a shotgun and detach your head from your body. That is scary. I am not a big horror buff, but I am a zombie fan. My horror section is probably 60% zombie films. One of my favorite movies of all time is Dawn Of The Dead. Just thinking about it gets me all excited. I sort of want to live the rest of my life in an abandoned shopping mall actually. It is so spooky. Sean Of The Dead was pretty fantastic too… it was probably the funniest horror movie I have ever seen. I have all the Evil Dead movies including the Necronomicon special editions that scream when you press them. I own at least two Re-Animators and Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive and about a dozen more (Redneck Zombies anyone?). Anyway, zombies are amazing and not just because they moan a lot and eat brains… they do a lot of other things too. After the jump I am going to break down my three favorite things that zombies do, so please, read on.

1. Dance
Thanks to Michael Jackson there is nothing more essentially zombie than a good dance number. If you type “zombie dance” into a YouTube search you get over 800 returns. Zombies are the perfect back up dancers. They all move slowly and in unison and make a great dance team. You really need someone to lead them though, like MJ’s werewolf. I thought about posting Thriller here for you, but I am sure you have all seen in a billion times. What you might not have seen is the Bollywood version. I actually posted it on this site six months ago or something, but you probably missed it then… if you didn’t then watch it again, because it is the funniest thing ever.

2. Fall In Love
The first zombie film I fell in love with was Return Of The Living Dead. I was really punk rock when I was 15 and this movie had punk rockers turned zombies and the Dammed on the sound track. I have it on vinyl and it is pretty amazing. There is this scene in the beginning when this medical display of half a dog comes a live but the dog is cut in half for proper viewing of his organs so he starts barking and flipping out while still being attached to the board. Fucking great. One of my other favorite scenes was when Freddy became a zombie and he decided he should be allowed to eat his girlfriends brain because they were in love. My favorite punk band at the time, The Qunicy Punx, wrote a song about it called “Tina, If You Really Loved Me, You’d Let Me Eat Your Brain”. They used the audio from the below clip for the intro to the song. When I tried to find this clip on YouTube I realized I knew all the lines word for word. Amazing and terrifying.

3. Fight Sharks
When big time zombie fans talk to me about their favorite zombie movies, the scene that always comes up is from Lucio Fluci’s Zombi 2 (or Zombie in the US) from 1979 when a zombie fights a shark. Sharks have very very small brains and they are much harder to fight than humans so I am not sure why this zombie would think to battle a shark. I guess he was just really hungry. I just don’t think the ends justify the means in this case. My friend Kerrigan has the scene tattooed to himself which is extremely bad ass and amazing. Time to watch it for yourself. Fucking mind blowing.
